Description
This is a brand new 12VAC 100VA transformer with a 120VAC primary. This transformer is frequently used for lighting applications but would be great for any power supply.
Four will fit in a medium flat rate USPS box.
How to Understand the Specifications:
1. This is very heavy duty transformer and if you compare it to other 100VA transformers you will see that there is a lot more iron and copper. This will help the transformer run cooler under full load.
2. The open circuit voltage on the secondary will be ~10% higher than 12VAC with no load. Transformer output voltages get lower under full load, so if the transformer were not designed to have a higher than 12VAC nominal voltage with no load, the transformer output would not meet spec at full load. The reason for the voltage droop is two fold. The first reason is the inherent winding resistance of the secondary. There is a voltage drop in the wire of the secondary that reduces the output at full load. The second reason is that the iron in the transformer is inherently non-linear and the efficiency reduces with increasing load with translates to an additional source of secondary voltage drop at full load.
3. The good news is that this transformer is very robust and will deliver 12VAC at full load. If you are designing a power supply that is a good thing since you can depend on the output not drooping below spec at full load.
